Have you read anything by Gary Marcus? He's a big LLM skeptic... Who also thinks that non-language models could get us closer to AGI. He's got a substack you should check out. I am pretty LLM skeptical myself, but you'll have to pry materialism from my cold, dead hands. (Of course I won't care at that point because I will be gone, per my materialism.)
The criticisms of Gary Marcus seem to fit my own experiences pretty well. I think I’m functionally a materialist but if you told me the world is an illusion, I wouldn’t be surprised.
