Hoel presents an extended argument about how human agency can be explained materially through a phenomenon called causal emergence. To me it seems like a pretty fruitful framework. It has inspired a number of ideas that I'm still nurturing.

I'd also recommend The WEIRDest People in the World by Jo Henrich. It is a great illustration of how intertwined biology and cultural are as inputs to human behavior, i.e. not neatly separable as implied by Harris' 50/50 claim. The field's jargon is gene-culture co-evolution.
